The Basilica of Saint Denis

All France’s kings (except three) are buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis, a one-day march from Paris. As well, it is the first example of Gothic architecture.

The site is awe-inspiring and the funerary sculptures, which stretch over centuries, are varied and splendid. Some carry a message: why do the deceased recline with their eyes wide open?

The Basilica of Saint Denis is an excellent family visit, because of the stories connected with the tombs, because of a sculpture of the martyr holding his outsize head, and because children love stepping out of the car onto the site of a medieval fair ground, which a huge, raucous market occupies now.

Discover La Petite Malmaison – An Imperial Treasure Reserved for the Privileged Few

Enter the world of La Petite Malmaison, a neoclassical jewel, which Napoleon Bonaparte commissioned to be built in 1805 as a private retreat for his wife, Empress Josephine.

Still in private ownership, less than 20 minutes’ drive from Paris, this intimate estate remains one of the rarest testimonies of the First Empire’s refinement and grace.

You will be welcomed and hosted by the owner himself, a distinguished historian and guardian of the estate’s legacy, who will personally guide you through its richly adorned interiors. The residence features original Empire décor, including rare bronzes by Pierre-Philippe Thomire, and the only surviving parquet floor designed by the master cabinetmaker Jacob during the Empire period. The visit also includes a walk through the landscaped park, inspired by the English garden tradition and reflecting Josephine’s deep passion for botany.

Discover, during an exclusive and unique tour, the Palace of Malmaison, a magnificent dwelling where the Empress Josephine and Emperor Napoléon lived, far from the austere atmosphere of the Tuileries Palace. Since its acquisition in 1799, Josephine has dedicated much time and passion to decorate this palace. Known as “the Petit Trianon” of Joséphine, your guide, an innovative creator of cultural events in particular dedicated to Empire period, will introduce you to her universe nearby Paris. He will evoke her passion for botanic and horticulture and reveal you how she used to receive the Imperial Court.

At the end of this visit, if you wish to pursue this exchange with your guide, you are welcome to invite him for a drink or a meal in a restaurant nearby that he would be delighted to recommend to you.
